Lubeck
Mansion
Serene,
comfortable, stylish and luxury living for over a century the Auburn Landmark
The Lubeck Mansion has embodied such expressions; starting when originally
built for D.W Lubeck and his family whom owned the D.W. Lubeck Dry Goods and
Mercantile store in Old Auburn. The
mansion itself, built for the Lubeck's in the mid 1890s, rested on a large 13
acre parcel of lush breathtaking land.
D.W
Lubeck unfortunately found himself to be ill of health in the early 1900s and
shortly after his illness had become apparent he passed away. Due to the
buildings ideal location and surrounding beauty the mansion would luckily live
past its original owner. In 1920
the mansion was transformed into the Highland Sanitarium using its surrounding
splendor to ease the restless minds of the patients admitted The mansion was
optimal for recovery at any state and acted as a sort of oasis to those who
came.
Along
with the Lubecks' transformation into the Sanitarium came an administrator's
house which still
stands
today adjacent to the mansion. The administrator's cottage was well beyond the
lap of luxury for the time it was used. The administrator lived in a stylish
cottage with views beyond belief; even more spectacular however was located in
the garage. Known as a "round table" the administrator would park
their car on a sort of round plate. On command the table would rotate the car
facing outward so that the administrator never even spend a wistful thought of
ever having to put his car into reverse.
The
mansion would continue as the Highland Sanitarium up until the year 1927 when
a fire would challenge the mansions residence and purpose within Auburn. The
remodel and reconstruction of the Lubeck Mansion added an entire wing to the
premises and along with the changes came an entirely new name as well as
purpose becoming, The Highland Hospital. One main vocation of The Highland
Hospital was birth deliveries, which the records of the births stilt can be
found within the mansion today, thus creating the inevitable uniqueness of the
history which the Mansion has created in Auburn as
well as auburn residents, especially those born within the Mansion.
The
records stored within the mansion are an impressive collection of various
documentation proofs including birth records; consequentially a local pair of
bank tellers, twins, who were born in the mansion, approached the owner to
query who their birth father was. The records were searched thoroughly until
lucky for the twins their birth record was found along with the mystery of
their true birth father found. The Lubeck's history in this way is substantial
and there are many recorded attempts of people visiting from far and near to
ask about records or simply visit the place they were born for a bit of
nostalgia.
Next
the mansion was converted into Independent Senior Living Housing where meals,
entertainment and transportation were offered daily. The location made it easy
for seniors to enjoy both the town and the foothills with ease and walking
distance.
Present day, the mansion has been formed and molded into every need and whim of Auburn but is now back to fulfilling the intentional need which it was built for, a home.
